Reyes Family Cigars – Premier

Posted By ironmeden on October 25, 2008

Tis the season for new cigars!

All the local cigar shops are getting in their orders from this years IPCPR event and its a bounty for the cigar smoker. New cigars from Perdomo, CAO, Arganese, Rocky Patel are now getting into stores here in Minnesota.

Its difficult to try and smoke all these new cigars when the Fall/Winter season is coming around. The time just isn’t there to try all the new stuff. Usually when I got into cigar lounges I’m just picking something out I’ve already smoked and I’ll enjoy that and then pick up a few new sticks. Those sticks are now sitting in my humidor aging for a bit such as the new Perdomo Squared, Camacho Liberty 2008, La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet. I hope to roll these out in the next few weeks.

Reyes Family Cigars Premier

Today I decided to head out to a local cigar lounge My Smoke Shop in New Hope, MN. This lounge has been open almost 5 years. Dave Setran the owner opened up the lounge after the previous cigar shop he worked closed up. Elvis and I really enjoy this shop, the guys that hang out there are all blue collar guys, regular joes just like Joe The Plumber. I’m not sure if Joe The Plumber is a cigar smoker, but I’d like to find out his address and send him a box of cigars.

My Smoke Shop has great plush leather couches and chairs which you just melt into when taking a seat. There is plenty a room in the shop for a large group of guys to hang out. The cigar selection is good, he has a lot of the classic lines available.

The cigar I picked out today was the Reyes Family Cigar Premier Toro which is 6 x 53. Reyes Family Cigars has a bunch of different lines underneath their umbrella such as Puros Indios, Cuba Alidos, Cienfuegos and of course their own cigar line under the Reyes Family Cigar name.

Construction:

Wrapper – Maduro Ecuador Sumatra
Binder – Nicaragua
Filler – Nicaragua (Condega & Jalapa)

The wrapper is not the most attractive cigar, it has a lot veins and a few water spots. At the head of the cigar it looked like the wrapper had torn off and it looked like they did a little skin graph surgery and placed a piece of wrapper over the hole. I’d never seen that on a cigar before, why not just toss this cigar in the recycle or 2nd’s bin?

The band is descriptive with Black, Blue, White and Silver highlights. A big R for Reyes is the centerpiece of the band with the name of the cigar at the bottom of the band. Its a nice looking band.

I punched the head of the cigar and lit it was my Xikar lighter. The draw was very smooth with a bitter taste. The flavor had a strong bitter coffee taste. The taste almost reminded me of a empty can of coffee. The bitter taste lasted till about the 1/4 point where the cigar seemed to mellow a little bit, but the coffee note was still strong.

The middle point of the cigar was nice, it was very different from the start of the cigar.

At the 3/4 mark the bitter coffee flavor appeared again. It wasn’t unsmokable, but did add another dimension to the cigar. The burn to the cigar was sharp and I never had any issues with it going out.

Overall the cigar is decent, its a mild to medium stick. Would I buy this cigar again, probably not. The price point in MN is just under $10. I would think having the name Premier, the cigar would be a little smoother and unique. I give this cigar a 3 out of 5.
