Isla De Cuba – Aged Maduro

Posted By ironmeden on October 17, 2008

Its that time a year again when my cigar smoking decreases. I’ll soon be winterizing my patio area which means goodbye to my smoking patio for about 7 months. If I’m lucky in the Spring, the end of April would be the earliest I’d be out smoking again on the patio. For now I have to go to local cigar shoppes and over to Elvis’ 4 Season Cigar Porch.

Now readers of the blog will remember that I had all my colored decrative yard lights stolen over a few week period this past summer. I haven’t decided if I will be replacing them next year. Why spend another $100 for somebody to decorate their yard, but I may be determined to put them out and try harder to catch the bastard.

Isla de Cuba – Aged Maduro

This week I headed over to Tobacco Grove for a cigar tasting for a new cigar to this area. Isla de Cuba is a new cigar within the last year. They were introduced at the 2007 RTDA show and have been reaching the local cigar shoppes.

I’m always in the mood for some new cigars so I purchased a couple to review.  The size I picked was a Toro which measures 6 x 54. The Aged Maduro is wrapped in a Double Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and binder. The filler consists of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco.

The wrapper is quite dark. The band is simple with a classic feel. It has in the center a Latino women holding a box of cigars and in the background the island of Cuba.

I punched the head of the cigar and lit it with my Xikar lighter. Right from the start the cigar is smooth. No bitter tastes. I got light coffee and chocolate notes.

At the 1/4 mark the cigar is certainly still smooth and creamy, the draw is a little easy and the burn even. Now even with the creaminess, I felt like I was missing something from this cigar. Maybe I shouldn’t say this, I should review the cigar for what is there, not for what isn’t there. I just wasn’t getting any complexity to this cigar.

The halfway point the coffee flavor ramped up. Still creamy and smooth, its such a relaxing cigar to smoke. The aroma from the smoke is very enjoyable. It has a sweet aroma.  The cigar also started burning a little hot and I was tasting a strong ash flavor.

The 3/4 mark the cigar started to get a little stronger in flavor. The coffee note was stronger and my head started to spin a little. It was still burning hot and the ash taste was getting stronger. It was unpleasent to smoke. I had to put the cigar down when I reached just past the 3/4 mark.

Overall this cigar started out pretty nice, but that halfway point it really wasn’t an enjoyable smoking experience. The $9+ price point on this cigar doesn’t make this cigar a repeat buy. I give this this cigar a 2.5 out of 5.
