PIO VI Overture Series 1996

As Elvis eluded to you in his previous post, it was an exciting week here in the Twin Cities. Almost every cigar lounge in the area had an event. Due to my work schedule I was only able to make it out to the General Cigar event.

It is great to see the support of the cigar manufacturer’s  is still strong in this community. Even with high burdens to the cigar smoker in this state, the people are very enthusiastic to show up and enjoy the new offerings from these companies.

My selection of cigars this evening is not a new cigar, but a cigar that has been around for many years but has been tied up in courts due to trademarks. Now that the legalities have been taken care of the PIO VI is coming back to market.

I received an email a few weeks ago from Alberto Medina announcing that PIO VI was available again.

To be honest I was not familiar with the cigar, but as a guy who loves cigars, I’m open to try new cigars, even old ones in name.

The email had many ratings from it’s previous incarnation in Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider. All the reviews gave the cigar high marks for the quality and taste. Of course this was for their ‘Classic Line’. The new line is called The Overture Series 1996 which gives reference to the first year PIO VI was available to the public.

The Overture Series 1996 is just one line which consists of a Ecuadorian wrapper and binder with the filler consisting of Dominican, Nicaraguan and Brazilian leaves.  The size that was sent to us was the Overture #2 which is 6×52.

The wrapper is dark brown in shade with a few veins. The band is simple, its has a brown color with the PIO VI in gold lettering. The band doesn’t stand out due to the color, it blends in with the color of the wrapper.

I smelled the wrapper and it has a sweet aroma. I clipped the head of the cigar and lit it up with a few matches. The draw is perfect.

The start of the cigar had a definite sweet taste complimented with some almond notes. The burn of the cigar was a problem. It burned uneven for about the first half, I had to light up part of the cigar a few times to even it out.

Past the halfway point the cigar really ramped up in flavor. I was getting a strong leather taste with a lot of complexity. At the start is seemed be a more medium to mild cigar, but it turned into a medium to full bodied cigar at this point. I was enjoying this smoke greatly.

Towards the last 1/4 of the cigar there was a nice spicy kick to the cigar. This really went well the complexity I was getting from the cigar.

This was a fantastic smoke and the second it ended I wanted another one to enjoy the rest of the evening.

This cigar would go great after a nice heavy dinner and it would go well with a Burgundy or Zinfindel wine and also a heavier Scotch. But I would recommend enjoying your first taste of this cigar with just water so you can enjoy the different flavors this cigar has to offer.

On our scale, I would give this cigar our highest rating of a 5 which is the luxury of sitting on a Velvet Couch. I’m not to sure of the availability of the cigar in your loca shoppes at this time since they are trying to get it back in the market, but if you see this on your shelves, you shouldn’t hesitate to pick this up.
