Padilla Obsidian Belicoso

As a cigar smoker, I really love this time of year. We enjoyed our first few days of wonderful weather. Lots of people out enjoying the Spring weather, taking walks, getting their homes ready for the Summer months. Of course this means plenty of cigar smoking out on the patio.
We decided this year to get a new set of patio furniture. Our previous set was purchased back in 2000 and it was getting pretty beat up. We had 6 chairs that had cushions and they all got pretty worn out over the years and we really didn’t need 6 chairs and didn’t feel like paying $30 a piece for new cushions. So tonight we found a new set at Menards. The table is smaller and round instead of the octagon shape the other table was and it took up a lot of room. The umbrella with that set was thrown out last year after getting beat up by the wind and rain. We now have 4 chairs with a cloth seat and they swivel and turn which will make the cigar smoking experience that much more pleasant. I’m all set for a season of reviews.
Tonight I broke out a 5 pack I purchased from cigarbid.com. The Padilla Obsidian looked very attractive at the website. It has a dark and imitating wrapper and that was I was looking for in a new cigar for smoking.
I took it over to a new cigar lounge in our area called Vino and Stogies in Mounds View. It’s right across the street from Robert’s where our old hang out was. The owner is the brother of the owner of Robert’s so we all know each other. We watched the Twins give the Royals their first loss of the year.
As noted before the cigar has a deep dark chocolate wrapper which is a Nicaraguan Ligero leaf. The only flaw I saw on this cigar was that the wrapper didn’t go all the way to the end of the foot, part of the binder was showing at the foot of the cigar. The make up of the cigar consisted of Honduran-grown Corojo tobaccos from the Jalapa Valley and black Nicaraguan-grown fillers from the fertile soils of Esteli. The smell out of the cellophane is rich and wonderful. The cigar is a torpedo shape with a size of 6×54.
The band is attractive as most Padilla’s are. It has a large ‘P’ in the middle surrounded by color accents of silver, black and purple with a Limitado inscribed. Also at the the bottom of the band the description ‘Edicion Especial 2006′ accented in gold.
I cut the tip and lit the cigar with a match. Right away I got a smooth draw with chocolate notes with hint of coffee. It was delicious from the start and all the way to the end. The burn was even leaving a gray ash. The smoke let off a great scent. For being a rich robust cigar there were not any spicy tendencies.
As the cigar went along it didn’t change at all, it was a very consistent cigar. I didn’t even need a drink to go along with this stick, it kept my mouth quite wet.
If you really enjoy a robust medium to full bodied cigar this is your cigar. I highly recommend this cigar for it’s flavor. If you want a great introduction to the Padilla line, this would be it.
