Rocky Patel – The Decade

Last evening Stogies on Grand was having a representative from General Cigars on sight. They were giving samples away of the new Hoya de Monterrey Tradicion. I smoked this a few months ago at Tobacco Grove and enjoyed it. Its a decent smoke and was not unpleasant in any way. As I arrived I was handed a sample and I walked into the humidor to check out whats new. Steve who has worked at Stogies for many years was in there and we chatted it up right away. He pointed me into the direction of the new Rocky Patel Decade cigars. He was smoking one of these the other night at the Dewer’s celebration of the repeal of Prohibition 75 years ago. He talked it up, so I had to get one. Even though it was a General Cigar night, I had to smoke up this Rocky Patel.

I picked out the Toro which is 6 1/2 x 52. The price of these sticks were much more then the traditional Rocky Patel’s. Usually an Edge will go for $5 to $8 and the Vintage Series will run about $7 to $10 depending on the region of the country you live in. These sticks were $12 to $14. The Olde World line will run you a little bit more then this series of cigars.

As I made myself comfortable at Stogies, I lit up the cigar and admired the ease of the draw from the cigar. It had a wonderfully smooth flavor coming from it. I knew it was a Rocky Patel Cigar. Their cigars like the Gurkha’s in my opinion, have a very distinct flavor throughout all their cigars. As you move from one to another in their line of cigars, you would be able to pick this cigar out as a Rocky Patel, even without a band.

As for the band it has 2 cream colored bands with accents of gold. The top band displays the Rocky Patel signature logo and the second band which is right below, pronounces that this is the Decade 10th Anniversary cigar. It blends in nice with the wrapper.

The construction of the cigar looked flawless. It has a soft push to the cigar as well as a nice smoking aroma. As I continued on smoking the cigar, the smoothness from this stick stood out. It was creamy and enjoyable with that hint of Rocky Patel flavor. When I talk about the Rocky Patel Flavor, what I mean there is a slight bitterness to their brands. Not that this bitterness is taking away from the enjoyment of the cigar, it is just part of their flavor, it is quite unique to their line of cigars.

Now on to the quirky middle part of the cigar. The smoothness of the cigar seemed to disappear and the bitterness took over. This is where the full power and flavor of Rocky Patel ramps up. The overpowering flavor was fine for a little while after the halfway point, but as I reached the 3/4′s point of the cigar, it really turned it on and the flavor almost got to overbearing.

I was lucky to have brought in some contraband into the store. I brought with me my first flask that I got the other night at the Dewer’s event. Inside of it was Chivas 18 Year Old Scotch. This was my first time drinking the 18 and it is quite smoother then the 12. The Chivas really helped me through the last inch or so of the Rocky Patel Decade.

If you are a Rocky Patel fan you will certainly enjoy this smoke. It’s unique that is has a creamy taste right away and is quite a relaxing cigar to smoke, but watch out after that midway point, bring protection with you!
