Cuvee Blanc

Posted By ironmeden on November 21, 2007

Over the past weekend I was invited to a ‘Smoke Easy’. Basically it’s the same premise as a ‘Speak Easy’, but with cigars instead of alcohol. I’m going to be extremely vague about the location since this is a diamond in the rough.

The people that go there are members, they had to pay a certain amount of money for a long term membership. The cap of members has already been met and there is a waiting list of several hundred. As a member you can invite guests, but they have to pay an entry fee to enjoy the atmosphere.

Walking into this place is beautiful and very manly. They have several areas for relaxing and enjoying your time while you smoke cigars. You can watch TV, sit around a table and chat, there is a pool table, wireless internet and of course alcohol.

My time there was spent just absorbing the little things. As I looked around I took away ideas for our cigar shoppe that we are planning to open. I think if we can incorporate some of them, we will make our place just that more comfortable.

Obviously this place is here due to the smoking bans in place here in Minnesota. I’d like to find out from readers if they have anything similar in their area?

My cigar review is the Cuvee Blanc.

I first heard about this cigar from listening to the Cigar Dave radio show. Its advertisements highlighted that this cigar is all the rage in Europe and is finally crossing the pond to these shores.

First of all I have to say I don’t trust Europe, so I wasn’t to inclined to trust their taste in cigars.

I went to my local cigar shoppe, Tobacco Grove and noticed recently they started carrying this cigar. They only have the Cuvee Blanc. I was in the mood for a lighter cigar this particular day and the cigar just glowed when I picked it up. It has a nice golden brown wrapper and upon smelling it had a creamy scent.

The cigar is all Dominican, but each part of the cigar’s tobacco was grown in different parts the Dominican Republic and I smoked the Churchill size which is 7″x50.

Now after I purchased the cigar, I took a closer inspection and found some slight green mold spots on the cigar. They were faint and could easily be scratched off.

Upon first lighting the cigar, it has a very smooth and even draw. The cigar was very easy to squeeze, it maybe felt like it was over humidified, which might possibly lead to the slight mold spots on the wrapper.

As I reached about an inch into the cigar, I noticed a taste that I recently had when I smoked the Zino. It was that musty flavor, like an old basement with water leaking. From there on it was really hard to enjoy the flavor of the cigar. It was creamy and smooth, but that musty and damp accents really wouldn’t let me enjoy this cigar.

I’m not sure if this a characteristic of the Cuvee Blanc, but if Europeans enjoy this cigar, they really need to expand their horizons a little.

Who else has had this cigar? whats your experience?

I found the same mustiness but maybe not as strong as yours. I also found like you the sponginess to the foot. The flavor reminded me of the Cusano 18 Double Connecticut but enjoyed the Cuvée Blanc much more than the 18.

If you had mold on the outside, chances are you may have had mold in the filler, or at least a lingering moldy taste in the wrapper. Sounds like it was overhumidified for too long.

The Cuvee cigars are a newer venture from the Cusano folks, which may explain a bit why it tasted a bit like the Cusano 18 to stinkie above. I’m not sure if Henke Kelner is involved with the Cuvee cigars, like he was in the other Cusano cigars.
