Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte

Well it’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed, so I dug deep into the humidor to see what older goodies have been waiting for me. I’ve been in a rut lately just smoking safe picks that I know I love almost to the point where if I’m going to smoke a cigar at night, I don’t want to smoke just anything because I look forward to that time all day.
Well, the fact is there are some sticks I’ve bought 5-packs of in the past and just kind of forgot about because they didn’t excite me. Does anyone else notice cigar smoking selection is a pretty moody thing? How many people think about what cigar they will be smoking if they know they are going to light up that night? I would bet most of you already know when you plan on setting that time aside what you will be choosing.
Well, I’ve also been trying to get rid of the remnants of my humidor that don’t particulary excite me and and stick to the good stuff. So, I found a Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte tonight and decided to give it a whirl. I remember liking the Cigar Nation golden child Sancho Panza Double Maduro in the past but found it to be a little dry and dull looking with no good oils. So I think that’s why I picked up this 5-pack when CI started selling them.
This cigar is slightly box pressed…not the razor sharp press you find on some sticks. It was nice and spongy just like I like em to be which was surprising since here in Minnesota winter is just around the corner and I can even notice how dry the house is in general. This is a big stick…probably 54×6.5 maybe? I always buy the bigger sizes since I want them to last a couple of hours.
I used my trusty V-cut and lit it up. Right away I noticed the peppery start and thought I had yet another Nicaraguan on my hands….have you noticed that is the country of choice with a ton of hot cigars these days? And they are all fabulous if not too peppery. But the pepper on this red-hued stick quickly dissipated and I started getting an almost floral…no wait…slight cherry backing in the aftertaste and it kind of turned my stomach a bit much like the Rocky Patel Vintage series does. I don’t know what it is….it’s just a very different and distinguished flavor which is so far away from the norm. I’m sure that’s why the RP Vintage is rated so high, but for me it just doesn’t work. Well, at this point I did some research to see how good my palate was and sure enough this is a Honduran cigar just like the RP’s! Damn I guess 7 years of smoking is finally paying off a bit.
Now as I got into the smoke and got used to that different flavor it was an ok departure from the normal stuff I like. The burn was flawless and the aroma of the smoke was quite relaxing. I think this cigar is worth a try for anyone liking that Honduran je ne sais quio. ….sorry, I should be shot for speaking French.
The official description of this stick at CI warns it will be a real ass kicker, but I didn’t find that at all. Maybe again my 7 years of smoking has built up my tolerance. Nowadays only all the new Camachos and Tatuajes make me spin. But maybe the biggest surprise is the cost of these things…these are the more expensive Sanchos and holy shit they run only $45 a box! Wow. At that price I could just chew on them all day if I like that flavor. Pick one up and give it a try!
As always…be good to yourselves my friends…
