Zino and Gurkha Black Puro
Posted By ironmeden on November 11, 2007
All week I’ve been sitting on a review for a Zino I smoked last Friday night at Stogies on Grand in St. Paul. I’ve been trying to find the Zino I smoked, but all I can find is the Platinum Series cigar. I finally found the name of the cigar, Mouton Cadet. It has the burgundy band.
Now I smoked the cigar and it wasn’t the best cigar I smoked. The purchase price was about $12. It had a musty flavor throughout, almost like it was moldy. The construction of the cigar was ok, a little dull looking. The band it plain.
As the smoke continued on, the musty flavor just got worse and almost unsmokeable.
I was halfway through the cigar and along with the musty taste, the smoke change. It went from a clear normal smoke to a cloudy brown smoke. It was not very attractive. The people I was sitting with took notice of the change in the smoke. They were irritated by the smoke coming from this cigar. Everyone started booing me as I kept blowing the smoke out.
Overall this cigar was not very good. Keep away from this cigar. I do have a Zino Platinum sitting in my humidor, I’m very interested in finding out the difference in these cigars.
Now the Gurkha Black Puro has been sitting in my humidor for about 4 months. I got this from a member of The Havana Night Cigar Club. I’m not sure why I waited so long to smoke this cigar, but I always seemed to have more intriguing cigars.
The cigar is a Torpedo which is 6.5×53. The construction is solid. It has a deep dark maduro wrapper with a slight oily sheen. The band is the standard Gurkha band but highlighted by silver accents.
Elvis had smoked a few of these and noted the peppery flavor from this cigar. As I started the cigar, I got no peppery or spicy flavors from it. The cigar has a smooth draw. The flavors I noted were paper with toasty hints. I was expecting a more full flavored smoke, but I felt it was more of a medium smoke. Just by the look of the cigar I felt It should of been a butt kicker.
As the cigar got to the middle, it felt like it weakened a little bit. The flavor seemed to escape this cigar. It was still smooth and enjoyable, but like with some cigars and you continue to the end, there should be a little more flavor, but the Black Puro flavor just faded.
The Black Puro reminded me of the Gurkha G3. I remember smoking the G3 earlier this year where it just lacked a punch.
Towards the end of the cigar, I did a few notes of pepper, but it was so slight. The cigar is a decent smoke, smooth and relaxing, but I was not impressed with it overall. It just doesn’t stand out as a fabulous Gurkha.
The cigar appears to be only available at cigarsinternational.com. There are so many better Gurkha’s out there, I would recommend this if your a fan of Gurkha, but I wouldn’t buy a whole box of them. This would be good for a sample of the Gurkha line. For a smoker who doesn’t know much about Gurkha, there are much better sticks out there for you to try.
