Oliva Series S

For Father’s Day, I took my Dad out to a Chinese Buffet…only the best for my dad. It was his choice for lunch. I would pay for it later in the day, but its well worth it since I was spending time with my Dad.
We decided to spend the afternoon at a local tobacco shoppe in Maple Grove, MN. Tobacco Grove is a great cigar shoppe. They have a large selection of premium cigars.
My Dad asked to get him a mild cheap cigar. He isn’t much a cigar smoker, so he thinks anything more then $5 would be a waste on him. I found a Peterson Reserva for $3. What??!! I paid $13 for this cigar 2 years ago!! I couldn’t believe it. I wish all cigars would go down in price like that. I hope I can get a CAO Vision in 2 years for $5.
I walked around for a few minutes and I wanted to try something new. I picked the Oliva Series S Toro. The cigar is $12 for this size.
I’ve had the Series G and O and have fallen in love with the Series G Maduro. The only cigar left to smoke was the Series S, but wait…I’ll have another Series to drool over soon from Oliva…the Series V. More on that in some future blog or podcast.
The Series S is has a Sun Grown wrapper from Ecuador, the binder is Cuban-Seed Nicaraguan tobacco with Nicaraguan Habano filler.

I lit the cigar and from the start it is a mild and smooth feel. There was a slight bitter taste but it went await quite quick. It had a nice even burn and even draw. This cigar is perfect for the cigar smoker that just needs to fill about 45 minutes. It has some nutiness to the flavor and at times a slight sweetness.
The wrapper started coming about at the head of the cigar. I’m not sure why it was so fragile, I wasn’t biting on the end like I usually do.
With about 1/4 left the cigar really turned a corner and it got really bitter. I also got a little peppery taste at the very end.
If i’m comparing the Series O and this series, I would go for the O just because it seemed pretty much the same as the S and the O is cheaper.
Would I pay for this cigar again? If I could get this cigar for about $6 I would buy it, but being were in Minnesota and the state loves taxing anything that moves, I will have to pass on purchasing it. The Series S is a good smoke, but I didn’t find anything unique about the cigar that struck me.
